"To be completely human we must translate our compassion and concern into useful service"
The preceding statement is from the SEVA Foundation’s philosophy. Having a broad heart one may develop an ethic of selflessness tempered with compassion. The Dalai Lama has said, "My religion is kindness." Another one of my heroes, Thich Nhat Hanh, teaches us that we can cultivate compassion if we have the courage to forgive. As well as others we must forgive ourselves. Forgivness, compassion and empathy are all qualities that lead us to where we recognize that we have the power to relive pain and suffering. An understanding of Anatta may or may not be helpful in the cutivation of these attributes. Karmic consequence and "paying it forward" may also be considered while exploring the landscape of giving and service to others. Please send me suggestions for this page.
